While the true definition of Web3 is still up for debate, it’s often defined as an interconnected network of decentralized blockchains that will provide a wide new range of user experiences, with user-generated content and content monetization at its core, strongly facilitated by the use of cryptocurrency. 

In this list, we’ll look at some of the most interesting Web3 companies making an impact on the industry today. We won’t include some of the largest companies, such as crypto exchanges like Coinbase, FTX, or Binance, or any of the major blockchains, since their impact is somewhat obvious.

Instead, we’ll focus on slightly more niche (yet still somewhat popular) firms that are making an outsized impact on the Web3 sector and are likely to grow quickly in the coming months and years. 

1. Brave Browser

Brave Browser may not seem like a revolutionary company, but it certainly has had an outsized impact on the Web3 sector. Brave Browser is perhaps the first major browser to adopt full Web3 integration. The browser allows users to natively connect dApps without the use of any outside browser extensions. Users can access most of the 30,000 decentralized websites on the internet, including websites with the increasingly popular .crypto and .eth domain extensions. 

Brave has also partnered with blockchain domain company Unstoppable Domains to allow browser users access to the 700,000 blockchain domain names registered by the company. Brave is also the first browser to have a crypto wallet built directly into the browser, which permits easy crypto purchases with fiat currency and multi-chain swaps. 

2. Secret Network

While some have lauded blockchain technology for providing individuals with increased privacy, others have voiced concerns that due to the immutable nature of public ledgers, blockchain transactions are actually less private than traditional financial and legal transactions– and that the technology is actually a significant threat to user privacy. 

However, some projects are making an effort to address this issue head-on. One notable blockchain privacy project is the Secret Network. The Secret Network is a decentralized network of individual nodes which supports encrypted inputs, encrypted outputs, and encrypted states for smart contracts. Users can use a specialized private viewing key to access their encrypted data, which they can share with third parties like auditors or wallets, giving users significantly more control over their data than on major blockchains like the Bitcoin or Ethereum blockchain, where all wallet addresses are publicly accessible. 

3. Deefy 

Deefy is a unique company revolutionizing the financialization of NFTs. Users can get instant loans on their NFTs without collateral. Options include mortgage NFTs, renting them out to other users, and “buy now, pay later” options to allow users to buy NFTs with no money down. Deefy acts as an escrow service between borrowers and lenders and helps establish a floor price for rare and valuable NFTs. 

Deefy also allows users to develop a specialized global credit score which allows them to access more and better financing for their NFTs. 

4. Social.network

Social.network is an upcoming web3 project funded and created by Earth DAO. The fully decentralized network, built on Ethereum, allows users to fully “own their data and assets via earth wallet, a self-custody, open-source browser wallet similar to Metamask but supports the Internet Computer and Bitcoin networks.” 

While little is known about the project so far, it seems to be a promising player in the quickly growing Web3 social media space.

 5. GuildFi

In the last year, there has been an increased proliferation in crypto and blockchain gaming guilds, which often operate as DAOs that can pool digital assets together to invest in assets in multiple games and multiple cryptocurrencies. It’s expected that, as gaming guilds grow, they will increase the power of gamers relative to game creators and studios, and will be able to increasingly influence the development and economics of the games the individual members play. For example, guilds will also be able to “walk with their feet” and transfer large amounts of assets from one game to another if they feel the game’s management is not providing a fair or quality gaming experience to players. 

That’s where GuildFi comes in. GuildFi is a quickly growing Web3 platform designed to connect gamers, games, and investors together, which can help further empower both individual gamers and guilds and allow easier swapping of assets across games and blockchains. In addition to facilitating crypto transfers in a variety of currencies, GuildFi also has its own token (GF), which, as of Q2 2022, had a market cap of more than $20 million. 

6. MakerDAO 

MakerDAO is the world’s largest crypto lending credit facility that provides loans at predetermined interest rates, and while it may be well-known, its outsized impact makes it an important candidate for this list. 

MakerDAO is nearly fully decentralized, with distributed teams across the world competing for funds to execute projects that will help improve the project’s usability, security, and efficiency while adding new and useful features for users. Users can borrow by depositing ETH into a MakerDAO smart contract, which creates a Collateralized Debt Position (CDP). MakerDAO then lends the user DAI, Maker’s native stablecoin which is intended to track the dollar as closely as possible. 

7. Chainanalysis 

Chainalysis is somewhat different from most of the other companies on this list, as it’s mainly a consulting, data, and software firm which provides services to other companies and individuals in the crypto and Web3 space. Among other products and services, Chainalysis offers a software-as-a-service product called Reactor, which helps crypto fraud investigations by connecting cryptocurrency transactions to real-world entities. The service is advertised as particularly effective at tracking flash loans and NFT theft. 

8. 0x

Like the internet itself, the crypto exchange industry has developed in various stages or generations. The first stage involved centralized, custodial crypto exchanges, where the owners of the exchange held full control over the exchange’s operations. The second stage involved the creation of large decentralized exchanges, which were non-custodial, but governance was mainly centralized. It seems that we’re now entering the third era of crypto exchanges, in which small teams can build their own decentralized exchanges to suit their own needs and purposes, with some of these exchanges themselves potentially operating as DAOs, though this has yet to be seen. 

This third generation of crypto exchanges is exactly where 0X comes in. The 0X protocol is not, by itself, a decentralized exchange, as it does not store trade orders on the blockchain, but instead, provides the infrastructure for individuals and groups to create their own decentralized exchanges on the Ethereum blockchain. In essence, the 0X protocol consists of a messaging standard paired with a group of smart contracts that facilitate the peer-to-peer exchange of assets, which provide the needed logic for generating, sending, receiving, and processing data linked to the trading activity of digital assets.

9. Alchemy 

Ethereum is by and large the largest practical blockchain for the development of dApps, Web3 applications, and metaverse projects alike. However, the Ethereum mainnet has a variety of significant limitations, including slow transaction speeds, high transaction costs, and storage space limitations. This is why a proliferation of Layer-2s and scaling services have sprung up over the past few years. The most famous Layer-2s include Polygon, Arbitrum, ParaState, Optimism, xDai Stable Chain, while other well-known Layer-2s include Skale, Cartesi, ZKSwap, and OMG Network, but even these Layer-2s have their own limitations. 

This is where Alchemy comes in. Alchemy is a powerful infrastructure solution that works with both the Ethereum mainnet and Layer-2s like Polygon in order to help developers build faster, more secure, and more efficient dApps. According to the Alchemy website “Alchemy Supernode is the most widely used blockchain API for Ethereum, Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism, Flow, and Crypto.org.”

10. LexDAO 

LexDAO is perhaps the largest project attempting to streamline the world of legal services with highly-efficient smart contracts for standardized legal transactions. While it’s not a lawyer or law firm, the decentralized organization is focused on building basic tools that ordinary people can use either in concert or in lieu of legal services. The organization, which is not technically a company, has a particular focus on helping people understand legal regulations in areas such as computer science, smart contracts, blockchain, and cryptocurrencies.

Solidity Compiler, aka Solc, is a command-line compiler for solidity programs. It aims to convert the solidity code to bytecode for Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) to interpret it. 

There are 2 types of Solidity compiler (Solc):

1. Solc (Written in C++) – It’s a command-line compiler that first converts the Solidity code to javascript using emscripten. Then compiles the javascript code to bytecode for EVM.

2. Solcjs (Nodejs Library) – It’s a command-line interpreter which directly compiles solidity code into bytecode for EVM. This JavaScript-based compiler can run in both browser and Node.js environments. The popular Ethereum IDE, Remix also uses Solcjs as a compiler.

3. Truffle

Truffle is a complete blockchain development environment used for compiling, testing, and deploying smart contracts and creating decentralized applications. It enables automated contract testing using Chai and Mocha. Truffle is well-equipped with required libraries and built-in procedures to ease the process of developing and deploying smart contracts.

4. Ganache

Ganache is a Blockchain simulator that can deploy on your local system. It enables a GUI to simulate Blockchain networks without setting up real test networks or an actual remote network. It provides vacant Ethereum addresses with fake 100 ETH in each account, use to test and deploy your smart contracts and decentralized applications.

5. Metamask

Metamask is a software wallet to store, send and receive ETH cryptocurrency and other Ethereum Tokens. It gets added as a web browser (chrome, firefox, brave, etc.) extension and works as an intermediate between the Blockchain and the decentralized applications. In addition, Metamask can connect with Shapeshift and Coinbase to sell and buy ETH cryptocurrency and ERC20 tokens.

6. Remix

One of the most popular and easy-to-use Ethereum IDE is Remix for executing and deploying a Solidity smart contract. It has the compilers compatible with almost all the versions of Solidity. Moreover, it has a simulated Blockchain environment with vacant addresses to test, run and deploy your contract.

In addition, Remix can also connect to the Ethereum blockchain using the Metamask wallet.

7. Geth

Geth is an Ethereum node implementation developed using the Go programming language. It’s available in three interfaces: the interactive console, JSON-RPC server, and command line. It supports blockchain development on Linux, Windows, and Mac operating systems.

Geth is an ideal and preferred tool for several Ethereum Blockchain tasks that include creating smart contracts, token transfer, checking block history, and mining ether tokens. Here, users can also connect to the existing Blockchain or develop their own blockchain network.

8. Web3.js

Web3.js is a collection of libraries that allow users to interact with an Ethereum node remotely or locally. It provides an API to interact with Blockchain easily. Web3.js is a kind of wrapper for JSON RPC to create a connection to a remote or local Ethereum node with either an HTTP or IPC connection.

It usually comes handly while using Nodejs to create decentralized applications.

9. Embark

Embark is a blockchain development and management tool that assists developers while creating decentralized applications. It also provides an environment to develop and deploy a serverless html5 application. Embark follows the contract code directly. So if any changes occur to the contract, it modifies the related dApps. 

10. Mist

Mist is another Ethereum full-node wallet exclusively created by the team of Ethereum. Here, the user must have a designated place to store their Ether tokens and execute their smart contracts. It is available for Windows (32- and 64-bit), Mac, and Linux (32- and 64-bit). 

As the mist is a full-node wallet, the user node has to download the entire Ethereum blockchain on the local system, which is generally larger than 1TB. 

11. Parity

Parity is a management tool that supports critical mission usage. It provides an infrastructure that facilitates speedy and reliable service. Parity offers an increased transaction rate. It takes less memory and synchronizes faster.

With all the hype surrounding these high-value pieces, the masses are diving into the NFT industry in droves, but what are the best projects to back?

1. Silks

Silks is a play-to-earn metaverse, meaning collectors can earn rewards by playing the game, which mirrors the thoroughbred horse-racing industry, complete with thoroughbred racehorses sold as NFTs.

The team behind the project is massive and includes founders like Dan Nissanoff, Troy Levy, Benjamin (Binny) Plotkin, and Michael Lira, all of whom have extensive experience as entrepreneurs, developers, and project managers.

The NFTs depict horses modeled after real-life thoroughbreds. When a real-world horse wins a race, the person who owns the horse’s NFT in the Silks metaverse earns a reward. 

2. Cryptoon Goonz

An undoxxed developer by the name of SeanTat2s developed Cryptoon Goonz. The collection features 6,969 NFTs depicting cartoon goon characters, almost like evil versions of the cartoon characters many people already know and love.

The intent of the project is to bring the NFT community together and give back to the community that supports the project. 

3. Autograph.io

Autograph.io is best known as Tom Brady’s NFT platform. Centered around sports, the project sells NFTs of mainstream athletes, giving fans a new way to show their support.

Members of the community build their collector scores by owning digital playing cards.

4. Bored Ape Yacht Club

Yuga Labs, a leader in the NFT industry, created the Bored Ape Yacht Club collection. The project has attracted the attention of a long list of celebrities, and mainstream music labels have even picked up some of the NFTs as metaverse megabands.

The NFTs in the collection act as keys to an exclusive club with a growing list of benefits.

Bored Ape NFTs depict cartoon apes. Each ape in the collection has a unique mix of traits, including facial features, background colors, headgear, and more. 

5. Decentraland

Ari Meilich and Esteban Ordano worked together to develop Decentraland. The project is a metaverse that allows users to purchase parcels of digital land. Users can develop their land, with the only limit being their imagination. 

Decentraland users can also explore land developed by other users and communicate with others in the NFT community.

6. Doodles

Evan Keast, Jordan Castro, and Scott Martin founded the Doodles NFT collection, which features 10,000 unique NFTs with hundreds of different traits. Each NFT in the collection is a colorful doodle depicting an animated skeleton, animal, alien, human-like figure, or spacecraft.

Collectors who own Doodles NFTs enjoy exclusive access to new products and hosted events. Doodles also run on decentralized governance, which means owners vote on important features, products, and events.

7. Women Rise

Maliha Abidi, a world-renowned Pakistani-American artist, and published author, created the Women Rise project. The project aims to bring further diversity and inclusion to the NFT industry.

In an effort to accomplish this goal, Women Rise features 10,000 unique, computer-generated pieces of digital art, all of which depict women. The women in the works are activists, scientists, coders, and other professionals of different nationalities and backgrounds.

8. VeeFriends

Gary Vaynerchuk, an ambitious member of the business community, developed the VeeFriends project. He also has a passion for creativity and brings both passions to the metaverse with NFTs. 

VeeFriends collectors don’t just own crypto-collectibles. The NFTs act as keys to the VeeFriends community and three years’ worth of tickets to an exclusive event known as VeeCon.

The collection features a wide range of abstract sketches of animals like birds, cheetahs, bats, fish, and even ladybugs, each with a quirky touch and colorful background.

9. Flyfish Club

Flyfish Club is a unique NFT project by David Rodolitz. The project is the first in the world that represents a private dining club to which owners purchase a membership through NFTs.

The restaurant at the center of the Flyfish Club is typically in New York City, and the menu usually features seafood creations from celebrated chefs. There’s also a robust raw bar featuring international flavors.

10. NFT Worlds

The undoxxed founders of NFT Worlds are known only by the pseudonyms ArkDev and Temptranquil. The project is an NFT game and metaverse where owners hold verifiable rights to digital land.

Owners develop their metaverse using Minecraft-like features and functionality.

NFTs in NFT Worlds evolve as owners develop their metaverse. When the worlds start, they look like pixelated views of woods, waterfronts, and rolling hills.

11. Axie Infinity

Axie Infinity is the brainchild of Vietnam-based company Sky Mavis. The project is a metaverse game centered around colorful creatures known as Axies that battle, build and hunt for treasure. 

Collectors can breed their Axies to create new NFTs, too.

The NFTs are colorful creatures that seem like a mix between birds and cats, each with a unique combination of traits.

12. Moonbirds

Proof Collective, a company co-founded by Kevin Rose and Justin Mezzell, developed Moonbirds. The company created the collection with utility and community in mind. Each Moonbird acts as a key to exclusive events, meetups and upcoming projects.

This collection of more than 10,000 NFTs features cartoon owls with different traits that make them unique. Some pieces in the collection even feature skeleton owls and robotic owls.

13. Fan Controlled Football

Sohrob Farudi, Patrick Dees, and Grant Cohen founded Fan Controlled Football. Ray Austin, a former professional football player, is also a commissioner on the team.

The creators based Fan Controlled Football on real-life arena football games. However, in the FCF community, fans call the shots. Fans vote on the plays, and the teams in the game carry the top-voted plays out.

The NFTs in the project, known as Ballerz, unlock the ability to control real-life football teams. Ballerz comes in various forms, from Bored Apes to Kingpins and others.

14. Invisible Friends

Markus Magnusson developed Invisible Friends, which features 5,000 invisible animated characters. The characters appear to be walking, and each has a unique combination of traits like clothing and background color.

The project has a road map that’s expected to lead to new characters and new abilities, such as being able to wrap NFTs into 3D versions.

15. Moon Boyz

The Moon Boyz collection is another undoxxed collection developed by four partners: Swan Kenzo, Maitre Fritz, Tesserakt, and Komet. The collection features 11,111 unique, randomly generated, 3D NFTs depicting space characters.

Those who own Moon Boyz NFTs have access to a growing community and events, both online and in real life.

The developers intend for the project to take a leadership position in different areas of the metaverse.

Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs) are one of the most exciting developments to come out of the crypto world in recent years and have experienced rapid growth towards becoming a vital part of the blockchain and crypto ecosystem.
